Postdoctoral position in Experimental Nuclear Physics
The Monreal group at UC Santa Barbara invites applicants for a postdoc position on the Project 8 experiment. The Project 8 collaboration (http://www.npl.washington.edu/project8/collaboration) is developing a new radiofrequency technique for measuring nuclear beta decay with high energy resolution. This method, applied to tritium decay, may be able to measure the mass of the neutrino; applied to other nuclides it may have applications in the measurement of fundamental constants, nuclear symmetry-violation searches, or other applications. At UCSB, we are doing R&D on magnets, Penning traps, microwave-pumping, and data analysis, as well as assisting the ongoing prototype experiment based at the University of Washington. In addition to Project 8, there are opportunities to work on KATRIN (http://www.katrin.kit.edu/) or on dark matter and double-beta-decay detector R&D projects.
We particularly seek candidates with experience with microwave electronics, whether from an atomic/molecular/accelerator physics, astronomy instrumentation, or solid-state experimental background. A background in nuclear or astroparticle physics (nuclear reactions, spectroscopy, symmetries, neutrinos and dark matter) is strongly recommended.
Candidates should include a current CV, a statement of research interests, and should arrange for 3 letters of reference to be sent via email to Prof. Ben Monreal at postdoc-search@physics.ucsb.edu; please include "Experimental Nuclear Physics Search" in the subject line. A Ph.D. or equivalent degree is required. The position is available immediately, starting date negotiable but fall 2012 preferred, and remains open until filled.
