Preliminary Information

• Course syllabus in various formats:
  • Normal Size
  • Large Size
  • Postscript (to make a clear printout on printers that understand postscript)
  
  
• There are web-based pre-quizzes that will constitute 15% of the course grade. These must be completed by 10:00 am Monday at the beginning of the week. We plan to make the prequiz available for viewing on the Wednesday of the preceeding week. For the week of April 5, they are due later, to give you time to get going; the first due date is Thursday, April 8 at 8pm.
  
  Click on Pre-Quiz to log in to the system.
  
  
• The Assigned Problems, plus section performance, will constitute 25% of the course grade. The list of problems is available in the link at the beginning of this paragraph, and additionally in the class web system. Problems are due by Friday at 3pm, in the boxes outside 1610 Broida.
  On the upper right corner of the back of your problem set, you must write:
  

  Your Name

  The Letter that identifies your section.

  The Building/Room of Your Section

  The Time of Your Section

  Your TA's Name

  to earn full credit. Please staple together all of your pages, and write your name on each page. We do not have the resources to handle late homework.
  Solutions will be available in the Physics 2 glass case on the first floor of Broida Hall, in the RBR, and possibly on the Web.
  
  For evaluation of section performance, the first hour of your discussion section is mandatory.
  
  
• Help is available at the Physics Study and Lecture Room at 3302 Broida Hall, also called the PLC, where physics TA's are available between 9:00am and 4:30pm every day. Help is also available through the Campus Learning Assistance Services, 893-3269, 893-4248.
  
  
• The midterm for the MWF 1-1:50pm section will be Friday, May 7. It will constitute 20% of the course grade.
  
  
• The final for the TR 11-12:15pm section will be Tuesday, June 15 at 12 noon. It will constitute 40% of the course grade.
  
  
• The final for the MWF 1-1:50pm section will be Tuesday, June 15 at 4pm. It will constitute 40% of the course grade.

Of interest...

• On January 12, the New York Times published an interesting article on the `scaling' of animal size... I copied the article to here. The ideas of stress, strain, and the transition to plastic behavior, discussed in Chapter 11, lead to some limits on how large life forms can get (at least on earth!).
• A cartoon that describes the phenomenon known as the `precession of the equinoxes', where the constellations that are in the night sky on, say, the date of the equinox in spring or fall, or on any other date reckoned with the Earth's seasons, to migrate on a 26,000 year cycle. The effect occurs because the Earth precesses, just like the gyroscopes shown in class, or like any spinning top.
