The Louvre: All the Paintings DVD-ROM is browsable and searchable by artist, by paintings collection, and by room in the museum.
To locate paintings by artist, go back to the main page and click ‘The Artists.’ From this page you can either use the search bar and enter an artist’s name or click on a letter of the alphabet to bring up a listing of artists. Once you have selected an artist, all the paintings by that artist currently on display in the permanent collection of the Louvre will be displayed. Click on the thumbnail paintings across the bottom of the screen to see the paintings at a larger size and click on the arrows on the side of the thumbnails to see more results. When available, a zoom-in feature will appear when you move your cursor over a painting.
To locate paintings by painting collection, go back to the main page and click ‘The Collections.’ From this page, you can select an art period (Medieval and Pre-Renaissance; Renaissance and Mannerism; Baroque and Rococo; or Neo-Classicism, Romanticism and Modern Art) for one of the four painting collections (Italian, Northern, French, or Spanish). Once you have selected a category, all the paintings within the art period of that collection will be displayed. Click on the thumbnail paintings to see the paintings at a larger size and click on the arrows on the side of the thumbnails to see more results. When available, a zoom-in feature will appear when you move your cursor over a painting.
To locate the paintings by room, go back to the main page and click ‘The Rooms.’ From this page, determine which wing you would like to explore (Denon, Richelieu, or Sully) and click on ‘rooms’ to select a room within that wing. Once you have selected a room, all of the paintings within that room will be displayed. Click on the thumbnail paintings to see the paintings at a larger size and click on the arrows on the side of the thumbnails to see more results. When available, a zoom-in feature will appear when you move your cursor over a painting.
For a keyword or advanced search, go to the main page and click on ‘Search.’ From this page you can use the keyword search to search all the categories on the DVD-ROM. Separate multiple word searches with a comma. (For example “da, vinci, mona”) For a more detailed search, click on ‘advanced search.’ From here you can search by artist, artists birth and death dates, painting name, painting date, Louvre inventory number, painting materials, and/or location.
Click on the Louvre link on the bottom right of the screen to be taken to the Louvre’s online catalog, Atlas. From there, you can also access the Louvre’s main website.
