Project 8 Collaboration Meeting
June 10-11 June 3-4, UC Santa Barbara
Transportation
How to get to Santa Barbara:
(General
advice from KITP)
Easiest: fly directly to SBA (Santa Barbara), well-served by United,
US Air, American Eagle, plus Frontier and Horizon. Car rental is available, and some hotels have shuttle service. The airport is a
pleasant one mile walk from UCSB campus. If you like, I can arrange to get you a bike.
Cheapest: fly to Los Angeles (LAX). If you rent a car, it's a
two-hour drive (the last 45m is a scenic coastal highway, the first
45m is the worst of LA traffic) The best LAX mass transit is the wireless-equipped Santa Barbara
Airbus ($84 RT) which departs LAX at 9, 11, 12:30, 2, 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, and
10, and gets to Santa Barbara in 2h15m. The second-best mass transit
option is Amtrak, with $25 each-way departures from LA Union Station (confusingly
called "LAX" by Amtrak, but LA Union Station is not at the airport.) at 7:35,
9:05, 10:15, 12:30, 2:55, and 7:00. To get from LAX airport to Union
Station, there's a $6 "FlyAway Bus" every half hour.
Maybe: The Burbank airport (BUR) (served by Southwest) is 10 miles closer to Santa Barbara
than LAX, but the miles you avoid are the worst of the traffic. The
Burbank Amtrak station is very convenient to the airport.
Avoid: Long Beach (LGB), John Wayne (SNA), Ontario (ONT). They're
technically LA-area airports, but farther away by an hour or more.
I've never tried Palmdale (PMD). The formerly-convenient Oxnard
airport (OXR) lost its only commercial traffic a year ago, but may
regain it.
Do I need a rental car?
Depends on the hotel; I'll let you know when we figure it out. UCSB
is a bit isolated from nearby urbanization, which includes your hotel
(whatever it turns out to be.) The most popular hotels for UCSB visitors have a free shuttle service to and from campus; see KITP's hotel guide. Downtown Santa Barbara has very easy
express-bus service to campus. A few Goleta hotels (grimy: Super 8,
Motel 6, or upscale: Pacifica Suites) are well-located for a bike
commute or a 2-3 mile walk. Otherwise, unfortunately, it's a car-dependent town.
Location
UCSB campus; to be arranged
Lodging
We have a block reserved under "Project 8", for $125 Thurs and $135 Fri nights. (I presume most people will leave Saturday. I expect a few rooms to be available Sat, but we couldn't get any in our block.)
