CESR Operations Report - April 22, 1999

CHESS Running

Problems & Improvements ( Thur - Wed = Q  F  S S  M  T  W )

Safety - Magnet "ON" warning chimes not working. Replaced a bad cross connect relay. W

Accelerator Cooling - Initially found that all water valves from 11 E to CLEO indicated closed. Found that the -24 V for all corresponding crates was shorted out. Used a clip on current probe to trace the short to a dsitributed vacuum high voltage low voltage control cable which was pinched under the rack. WL and MWC replaced the end. Mike also found a second vacuum control cable which was also damaged. T

Vacuum - E- Dust trapping during my one fill. Cleo west silicon detector went sky high. OK after e- beam removed. S

Let-up Q9W to Q18W section, replaced 1/8' thick gasket by 0.08' gasket at kicker end 10' flange and mounted an all-metal angle valve at kicker location. M

The new aluminnum feedback cavity was installed in the East tunnel near Q9E. The pumpdown was completed by 10:30am, but a small leak in one of the oval flange conntional fl fll flange gaskets was found after leakchecking at a pressure around 6e-8. Tests show pressures were dominated by outgassing, not by the leak. M

The leaky oval gasket at the Feedback Cavity was replaced by a new 0.25" thick gasket. The culprit was found to be a thin (~20micron) hairlike thread across the knife edge. T

Control System - Problem with FIFO for graphics system for CESR24. The VGS color glitches from CESR24 were isolated to the VGS interface card in the CESR24/CESR27 interface crate. The card was replaced and problem cured. The original card was put back in and problem also cured (reseating, flexing, cooling???). M

Gun - Could not reset the LS2 gate interlocks for the gun HV. Several cables were moved to prepare for testing a spare Linac section. One of these is for the safety switch which is needed to complete the LS2 ready chain for the gun. reconnected the safety switch. T

Linac Magnets - The e- analyzer (4, 12 and 18 degree bends in snout) current was varying by a few digits, probably resulting in the synchrotron beam "breathing". Added a flower pot to the error signal cable between the regulator chassis and the Hobart. Q

Moved the flowerpot in the Hobart "command in" cable. It was at the regulator chassis end and is now at the Hobart end of the cable. This seems to have made a 2x improvement in e- analyzer current stability. M

Retuned PFN's for Modulators 5 and 7, to make Klystron Pulse voltage flat. M

Linac RF - Linac HVPS 1 overcurrent trips. Find arcing at DQing pearson current monitor. Replaced cable and current transformer. Also had arcing at the anode of the Klystron Modulator 1 Thyratron. Replaced cable. Also found that the heater connection to the thyratron had broken off and arced over. Replaced thyratron with one previously removed from Modulator 5 (where it had stopped firing, and we could not raise the reservoir voltage enough). Previously, we installed a higher voltage transformer for the reservoir in modulator 1, i.e. 12V vs. 5.5V. Found we had to raise the reservoir from 4.7V (where the tube used to run) to 9.5V to get it to fire reliably. Unfortunately, the Powerstat which adjusts the voltage on the primary, was getting loaded down, and we had to bypass it with a variac, sitting on the floor of Modulator 1. Q

Funny smell coming from Linac Modulator 6. Find one new Maxwell capacitor in PFN is leaking oil and its capacitance increased from 8 to 12 nF. Replaced. T

Modulator thyratron 1 The trigger board breaker has tripped numerous times. T

Vacuum leak on Linac test section: vented to N2, replaced CCG at window end (upstream), replaced Alpert gasket at output end (downstream). Found vacuum leak on output end water fitting/bellows lower starboard side (looking downstream from window),repaired with loctite. T Releak checked found leak on output end water fitting/bellows upper starboard side, repaired with loctite. W

Synchrotron Magnets - EXF Septum 2 current limited to a max command of 1465 (out of 2000). The main contactor at the synchrotron e- septum #2 was changed because of a bad contact. M

Feedback - Fill e+ bunch 1-5 in trains 1-4. Feedback not working properly for bunch 5 e-, so only filled e- bunch 1-4 in trains 5-9.

CESR current readbacks incorrect.

CESR RF -  Found bad card in SRF Ready Chain, This portion of the card provided status of the W1 FBT Water Flow to RF INTL and CXC. M
