False Ballade on the Geneva Rain
for Mette
- We have the expectation
- after three thousand years of history
- (with the occasional exception
- from Greek or Christian mythology)
- that each new morning will see a new sun rise.
- Yet after long rain we're surprised by blue skies.
- Despite our insulation
- and roofs, our fortieth story
- penthouses, our recreation-
- al drugs, our tv sports glory,
- despite our creature comforts and unnatural highs,
- with what joy we are surprised by blue skies.
- And when all creation
- raises raging storms from allegory
- razing each habitation
- and each field, do we worry?
- We know one day laughter will replace frightened cries.
- Let it rain. We'll be the more surprised by blue skies.
