The Lion

For Liu Li

He thought he might once more lie free in the sun
By fleeing near light-speed, but had to fail.
He could no more escape thus than outrun
His shadow or tail.

His keepers saw him shrink and feared he might
Slip through the bars which held his boundless rage:
But the bars became more dense in his own sight,
Perfecting his cage.

Defeated, he could only look inside
Himself. He learned he did not have to flee.
And taking "turning inward" as his guide,
He spun himself free.
